James Esdaile était un chirurgien écossais et une figure importante dans l’histoire de l’hypnose et de l’anesthésie générale.
Il a travaillé pendant vingt ans pour la Compagnie des Indes orientales britanniques et est surtout connu pour avoir utilisé l’hypnose avec succès pour effectuer des opérations chirurgicales dans des conditions rudimentaires en Inde.
Sa méthode était connue sous le nom de « sommeil magnétique » et ses expériences ont contribué à établir la légitimité de l’hypnose en tant que discipline médicale. [1, 2, 4]
